Have You Ever Seen The Movie...

I don't even know what I can say about this guy. The next morning he'd found me on facebook somehow, and I was greeted with the charming profile picture of his finger up his nose and his mouth wide open with his tongue hanging out. Hawt.

Don't forget that The Art of Secret Prison will be on display at Brave New Worlds this First Friday! Details at the link. I may also print up one of these bar drawing to hang up at the show. Which one do you think deserves the honor?

Heart Problem (from Secret Prison #2!)

Hey gang, pick up your copy of Secret Prison #2 yet? It's seriously killer. I'm so impressed by everybody's comics. Next issue's gonna have some stiff competition!

We're also having a show this coming First Friday in old city! Original artwork from Secret Prison #1 and #2 will be on display at Brave New Worlds (45 N. 2nd Street), Sept. 3rd 6-10pm. Fancy! I'll have both my comics up and you'll be able to pick up the new issue there. Come check it out!

In the meantime, my comic from #2:

Eh?! Native Speaker?!

Remember the "So I Walked Into A Bar..." series? Yeah I forgot about it too. Well, here comes the next edition, from the cramped little bar in my very quiet neighborhood when I lived in Tokyo. This geography teacher was so interested in talking to us about America and American things as he sloshed around for a while. And I apparently made his night after he made an off-the-cuff comment about not liking rap because he can't understand what they're saying.

Japan is the best place to meet friendly, talkative drunks. More of these to come from that side of the world!

The Functionality of Flaws

Hey hey superfriends, I want to thank everybody who came out for the Philly Alt Comic Con and supported local cartoonists! It was a total blast, and we had the best seats in the house (right in front of the only window fan ;)). I'm really looking forward to next year!

And in the meantime, I'll be sharing a table with Claire Folkman and Dre Time at B.Y.O.T.Y. II (Bring Your Own Table Yo!) at Little Berlin on September 26. I am planning a few more books for that event, so check it out! Should be sweet.

The Secret Prison #2 release party was also really great, and the tabloid itself is so incredibly good. Make sure you check out comic shops around the city for a copy, every page is fantastic! I'll be posting my comic from it soon.

At PACC I got to debut my hand-bound books of my "The Functionality of Flaws" series of drawings. For your viewing pleasure I have uploaded them all on my website! Go enjoy my resourceful little ladies. Feel free to email me if you'd like a copy (kellymakesart (at) gmail.com).

MoCCA Trip continues! HULK OUT

I'm long past due on wrapping up the comics about my trip up to MoCCA months ago. I've passed over any events at MoCCA for the time being (or any escapades that occurred after Drink & Draw) and jumped ahead to my friend Claire and my subway journey back to Penn Station.

I had some x-treme bruises after this, but the horror and embarrassment of NOT making it through those doors was too much for my latent superhuman strength to not emerge.

Reminders:

Aug 7 - Philly Alt Comic Con/Secret Prison BBQ @ Locust Moon! 6:00pm, 40th & Locust
Aug 8 - Philly Alt Comic Con!! @ The Rotunda! 12:00-6:00pm, 40th & Walnut

Secret Prison #2 is fassstttt approachinggggg!

Extra news: You can now share these comic posts using the buttons at the bottom of the post! Facebook, twitter, whatevs!

The Ladies Down The Hall

One of the biggest perks/distractions from my old internship was the non-stop entertainment from the extremely loud, unbarred, unaware ladies down the hall. Really nice though! Also, the irony isn't lost on me that the day after I finished this comic, I spent most of the day sneezing uncontrollably.

Secret Prison #2 has also been totally funded (and then some!) and is heading out to the printers at the end of the week!! Keep an eye out for it at comic shops around the city, or come to the official debut at the Philly Alt Comic Con, where I'll be sharing a table, on August 7! There's also a BBQ for PACC at 6pm the day before where you can meet and hang out with lots of Secret Prisoners (including ME!) at Locust Moon Comics at 40th & Walnut. COOL.

At Least I Don't Have Watch Tan

The sad state of my life.

And don't forget about pledging for Secret Prison #2! Less than three weeks! I'm also personally offering to draw anything you want if you pledge $5-10 and message me with your request. So do it!

Hipster Girls Have Hunches

Long break hopefully over! This was inspired by a recent trip to the 700 Club and I stand by its scientific accuracy after observing many subjects during the night. Though the greater mystery that it unveils is a chicken and the egg dilemma: do hipster girls create the hunch, or does the hunch create the hipster? The world may never know.

Also! Secret Prison #2 is in the works and due this summer! We have a very fantastic group of contributors this time around, with about half of the comics coming from Philly and the other half coming from all over the world! Globalization hurrah! We are funding this issue using Kickstarter, a fundraising website, where we're offering you copies of the tabloid mailed right to you, ad spaces, and original artwork (coming soon)! Please please please pledge a few bucks and helps us reach the goal amount by the end of next month. You aren't charged unless we reach the goal, but we'd very much like to charge you and have this project happen.

Thanks thanks thanks! Every little bit helps.

The Next Tragedy

Been super busy lately! Work work work, drive drive drive. In the meantime, this series of awful events has happened to the same dude that the last comic featured. Clearly putting it in comic form makes everything better. Right? The worst luck.

Also, flip-brim woooo

In other (summer) news, I am now going to have some table space at the Philly Alt Comic Con! It's gonna be on August 8th at the Rotunda in West Philly. Chyessss.

The Tragedy

Truly an unfortunate evening. Also I got a haircut! De-frumped! Get used to it, comic-self.

A Typical Occurrence

Oh free wine, have you ever wronged me? (Yes. Yes you have.)

We met lots of awesome ladies at Drink & Draw, like Lucy Knisley, Kate Beaton (and her sister, as you can see above), the girls from Soda Pop Comics, and lots of others I'm probably forgetting! The room was also much more crowded than I was willing to draw, it was pretty nuts. I spent a lot of time wading through crowds for more wine, getting rowdy, and drunkenly handing out my business cards, which I expertly craft from old train schedules. Classtastic.

ALSO! Here's a link to Claire's diagram of how to make a one-page book. It's cool. Do it and be cool.

Title 13

Next comic about my MoCCA trip. It'd been months since I took the census test for a job, and they so kindly called me while I was on the bus ride up to NYC. I'm currently working for them, so it all worked out okay! Government employee, HAH. I've never (successfully) been sworn to confidentiality before. What an experience.

MoCCA Goodtimes

I decided that instead of talking about how my trip to MoCCA was, I would comic about it! Here's the first installment of my journey, featuring my adventuremate Claire, me, and the unfortunate fate of an unsuspecting pothole.

Pissing Contest

Based on a wonderful experience one of my friends had. I started to feel weird drawing little boys wizzing...

Odds 'n Ends

To get things rolling, I'm gonna slap up some bits and pieces from different projects I've been working on and a couple-a odd illustrations that've been helping pass the time. Being between jobs this past week was at least good for opportunities to get drawin'!

#1:

#2:

#3:

#4:

#5:

#1: Doing a series of illustrations called "So I Walked Into a Bar..." based on the multitude of strange, true things that have been said to me at many fine drinking establishments. This one features a singer at a jazz café that I frequent. He got a little upset at my screwdriver.

#2: I think my friend said this was like a grotesque flying squirrel. She's so majestic. Part of "The Functionality of Flaws"

#3: Havin' a good old time with beefy ladies.

#4: At the request of a friend, the true story of my Earth Day birthday.

#5: My friend took her boyfriend on a train-themed weekend getaway and asked for a card a la The Simpsons to go along with the festivities. My version came out pretty deranged. Thinking possibly more of these as a coloring book?

Stay tuned for more!

Secret Prison (and me!) @ MoCCA!

This weekend (actually in mere moments!) I will be heading up to MoCCA Festival for super fun comicking adventure! Kicking it off tonight with Drink & Draw Like A Lady with my ladyfriend and fellow rad person Claire Folkman (who makes sweet comics, go look at them!). Then it's off to the meat of things on Saturday.

MoCCA marks the debut of the first issue of the entirely fantastic Secret Prison! A Philly-based alternative comics tabloid that I'm pretty stoked to be participating in! It's being put out by the fine people who partake in the Philly Comix Jam.

You can take a look-see at my SP comic here: The Ol' Grumpy Mountain.

Secret Prison's also having a second debut here in Philly at Brave New Worlds next weekend, which will be just as exciting! Away we go!
